My name is Gabriele and I am an Italian master student in Statistics at the University of Minho, Guimarães. I always wanted to do an experience abroad to get to know new traditions and cultures around the world. Since when I was young, I have always dreamed of visiting Portugal from south to north, from one island to another until the moment when I had this opportunity. Even though with the covid-19 pandemic situation I was a bit worried, I have always been sure about coming here because I knew that this experience would have something that would never happen again in my life.  

Guimarães is a small university city where you can find everything you need and people are always ready to help you. I was surprised about how many green places are there. Moreover, the historic centre is very suggestive to see and visit. From every place in the city you can see in the distance the Penha’s sanctuary that controls Guimaraes from a panoramic point on top of a hill, I advise everybody to go there for long walks and relax for a day surrounded by nature.

The university is full of activities and things that help you to grow in your university routine life; moreover, it is considered one of the most important universities in Portugal, and the orientation program for international students is very useful to let you know everything about universities stuff and activity and how to get used to the university environment.

One of the most beautiful things that I will remember about this Erasmus experience and about Portugal is the people I met. Even with this pandemic situation, I met students from lots of countries in Europe and now they are like my second family. In that way, I was able to know different traditions and languages and for me it was really exciting, and I am thankful.

The University of Minho has also another campus in Braga; it’s a bigger city than Guimaraes and rich in art and culture. Porto, where I found one of the most beautiful sunsets in my life near the riverside, is a wonderful city. I didn’t expect how suggestive it is and how many descends and climbs there are; moreover It is a very suggestive city full of art and churches. As you expected there are lots of seafood specialities in Portugal: there are more than 30 ways to cook cod and seafood everywhere. If you are hungry, “Francesinha” should be your choice: there are so many things inside it that probably it’s better if you don’t ask for the ingredients. And there is always time for the dessert: “Pastel de Nata”! You will miss them when you will leave.

During Erasmus Experience, the ESN Erasmus association, which is in each Erasmus city around Europe, usually organizes activities like day trips or parties for international students to socialize and visit new places in Portugal. Organization of these events is perfect; you will always learn or see something new with them because they are friendly and kind.

The time spent in Guimaraes will always be in my memories because It is a second family and I will be always thankful for this. My advice is: if you want to be an Erasmus student abroad, leave with an open mind because It is an experience that will help you grow and change your life. A piece of my heart is in this country. “Até logo Portugal”.

Uma experiência enriquecedora que vou sempre levar comigo

O meu nome é Gabriele e sou um estudante italiano de mestrado em Estatística na Universidade do Minho, em Guimarães. Sempre quis ter uma experiência no exterior para conhecer novas tradições e culturas ao redor do mundo. Desde jovem, sempre sonhei em visitar Portugal de sul a norte, de uma ilha a outra, até ao momento em que tive esta oportunidade. Mesmo que eu estivesse um pouco preocupado com a situação da pandemia Covid-19, sempre tive a certeza em vir para aqui porque sabia que esta experiência teria algo que nunca mais aconteceria na minha vida.

Guimarães é uma pequena cidade universitária onde podes encontrar tudo o que precisas e onde as pessoas estão sempre prontas a ajudar. Fiquei surpreendido com a quantidade de lugares verdes que existem. Além disso, o centro histórico é muito sugestivo de ver e visitar. De cada ponto da cidade se avista ao longe o santuário da Penha que domina Guimarães de um ponto panorâmico no alto de um morro, aconselho a todos que passem por lá para longas caminhadas e relaxem por um dia rodeado pela natureza.

A universidade está cheia de atividades e coisas que te ajudam a crescer durante a rotina universitária; além disso, é considerada uma das universidades mais importantes de Portugal, e o programa de orientação para estudantes internacionais é muito útil para te dar a conhecer tudo sobre o material e a atividade universitária e como habituar ao ambiente universitário.

Uma das coisas mais bonitas que vou lembrar-me sobre esta experiência Erasmus e sobre Portugal são as pessoas que conheci. Mesmo com esta situação de pandemia, conheci estudantes de vários países da Europa e agora eles são como a minha segunda família. Dessa forma, pude conhecer diferentes tradições e idiomas e para mim foi muito emocionante, e estou grato.

A Universidade do Minho possui também outro campus em Braga; é uma cidade maior que Guimarães e rica em arte e cultura. O Porto, onde encontrei um dos pores-do-sol mais bonitos da minha vida à beira do rio, é uma cidade maravilhosa. Eu não esperava o quão sugestivo é e quantas descidas e subidas existem; além disso, é uma cidade muito sugestiva, cheia de arte e igrejas. Como era de esperar, existem muitas especialidades de marisco em Portugal: existem mais de 30 maneiras de cozinhar bacalhau e marisco em todo o lado. Se estás com fome, “Francesinha” deve ser a tua escolha: tem tantas coisas dentro dela que provavelmente é melhor não pedir os ingredientes. E há sempre tempo para a sobremesa: “Pastel de Nata”! tu sentirás falta deles quando partires.

Durante a Experiência Erasmus, a associação ESN Erasmus, que se encontra em cada cidade Erasmus da Europa, costuma organizar atividades como passeios de um dia ou festas para estudantes internacionais socializarem e visitarem lugares novos em Portugal. A organização desses eventos é perfeita; sempre aprenderás ou verás algo novo com eles porque são amigáveis ​​e gentis.

O tempo que passei em Guimarães ficará para sempre na minha memória porque é uma segunda família e serei sempre grato por isso. O meu conselho é: se queres seres estudante Erasmus no estrangeiro, sai com a mente aberta porque é uma experiência que te vai ajudar a crescer e a mudar a tua vida. Um pedaço do meu coração está neste país. “Até logo Portugal”.
